  • Mysore Of Royal Lineage

    Mysore Of Royal Lineage

There was once a time when royals of the Vijayanagara Empire flocked to Bangalore (now called Bengaluru), their summer abode, far from the scorching sun of their residence. Itโ€™s been centuries since their decline and how the times have changed! The city crowd is always looking for quick getaways, and Mysore, hot or not, always makes the listโ€”it was, after all, a capital for the royal court for centuries and continues to hold regal appeal.

About 150 km from Bengaluru, Mysore can only barely be experienced over the weekend with everything it has to offer, but one sure can try. A trek to the Chamundi hill may be the perfect start. If you start early you can reach the hilltop for sunrise and watch the mellow light wash over the entire city. A quick peek into the famous Chamundeshwari temple at the top, a chai and pakodas break and you are set for a day of exploration. If you are there on a Sunday though, you may want to consider going to the hill when the Mysore Palace is lit and watch it gleam from atop.

    The Mysore Palace
The Mysore Palace is a sight like no other, royal with its glittering facade and untouched interiors.
    Jaganmohan Palace
Jaganmohan Palace houses the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma commissioned by the Mysore Maharaja
    St Philomena's Church
The gothic-style St Philomena’s Church is inspired by the Cologne Cathedral in Germany

Speaking of the Mysore Palace, it would be sinful to miss this dazzling display of art, architecture and wealth that has managed to remain almost untouched over time. Add to this a visit to the Jaganmohan Palace which houses the most exquisite southern art and St Philomenaโ€™s Cathedral and you have yourself enough history.

    Mysore Zoo
Tigers, jaguars, giraffes, sloth bears, zebras, elephants, the list of animals in the Mysore Zoo goes on

The Mysore Zoo is a mustโ€”tigers, lions, jaguars, giraffes, leopards, crocodiles, wallabies, sloth bears, zebras… the list goes on. The Sand Sculpture Museum is worth its money, as is the Regional Museum of National History and the Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion Museum Complex. But if there is anything worth experiencing in the city, it is its free spirit. Food is never an afterthought, and while there are watering holes too many to count, some of the best for a meal fit for a hungry Maharaja would be Poojariโ€™s Fishland, Bopyโ€™s, Hotel RRR and Vinayak Maylari.

    NAVIGATOR

Getting There: Mysore has flights and trains connecting it to all major cities. It is a little over a three-hour drive from Bengaluru.

Travel Tip: A lot of the tourist spots are closed on Monday, so plan around it.

    Checklist

โ€ข Mysore Dasara It is the time when the city is at its liveliest. The Chamundi hill is where the demon Mahishasura was killed by Goddess Parvati, here named Chamundeshwari, and the festival is celebrated with much fanfare.
โ€ข Eat You cannot leave Mysore without trying the famous Mysore Pak. The sweet, which dates to the reign of Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV, is known for its rich, melt-in-themouth texture which will have you wanting more.
โ€ข Go trekking The Chamundi hill is 1,001 steps away if you feel up to a climb. The steps were built in the 17th century by the then ruling Wodeyar (or Wadiyar) king and is located behind the JCB College area.

  • Top Destinations To Visit In Scandinavia

Top Destinations To Visit In Scandinavia

    SWEDEN

    Stockholm - Sweden

In summertime, Sweden is often referred to as โ€œThe Land of the Midnight Sunโ€ due to the sun barely setting.  With long days there is an abundance of time to explore Swedenโ€™s vast wilderness, boasting pine and birch native forests the stretch on forever, crystal-clear lakes, and snow-capped peaks in the north, Sweden possibly has the cleanest air in Europe.

In the winter, when the snows come, the country comes alive with a wealth of winter sports, from snow-shoeing to cross-country skiing and from dog sledding to snow-mobile rides, an ideal destination for the adventurer in you.

    DENMARK

    Tarup - Denmark

First stop Copenhagen, one of the coolest Scandinavian destinations, compact, gritty, edgy, diverse and liberal, everything you want in a modern European capital.  Surrounded by sea and split by a number of lakes, Copenhagen has a chilled out waterside vibe that will you captivate you.

Denmark is recognized around the world for creating some of the most extraordinary culinary delights and it has more Michelin-starred restaurants than the rest of Scandinavia combined, itโ€™s like fine dining was invented on these shores.

    NORWAY

    Lofoten - Norway

Impressive, secluded, mysterious, off the beaten track, remote to outsiders are just some of the ways to describe this incredible country. Itโ€™s remarkable considering how close it is geographically to the heart of Europe. Most people know little more than the capital, Oslo and the famous fjords but there is so much more to explore.

Norway by car is a perfect way to experience the mighty Atlantic seaboard, inspiring fjords and spectacular mountain scenery.  There are so many exciting routes you can take to tour this amazing country and get there with Stena Line Ferries.

  • North Goa: A Offbeat Destination Experience

North Goa: A Offbeat Destination Experience

You can stay in the North, dance away to EDM music at night, and yet enjoy an offbeat experience

Travelling to Goa has somewhat become an annual ritual for international and domestic tourists alike. Itโ€™s more like a habit and not just a destination for families as well. The moment you catch sight of the runway at Dubolim International Airport, you know the next few days are not going to be ordinary.

Those who seek to enjoy nightlife and parties mostly settle around North Goa, while those who prefer seclusion and want some quiet moments, head to the South. But trust me, there is a thin line in between. You can stay in the North, dance away to EDM music at night, and yet enjoy an offbeat experience.

During my recent trip to Goa, my agenda was to explore not-so-popular places that are accessible from the popular beaches of Baga and Calangute. I stayed at the Lazy Lagoon Portico Sarovar, from where bustling beaches were almost a stoneโ€™s throw away. When I wasnโ€™t fishing at the lagoons, I would simply drive around the area looking for something to enjoy like most tourists do.

Firstly, I hired a self-drive Tata Tiago as I needed a car with good mileage and higher ground clearance. And hereโ€™s what I enjoyed in the sunny state.

    Saturday Night Bazaar, Arpora

If you love handicraft, have a knack for picking-up good things from locals and enjoy food, the Night market in Arpora has ample to offer. Located within two minutes waking distance from the Lazy Lagoon Sarovar Portico hotel, this is one place where you could shop until you drop.

The night market experience is amazing. Itโ€™s like a music festival where there is unlimited supply of food, a mega exhibition of handicrafts, spices and clothes. The gates open at 6 pm and you can spend hours sipping on green tea samples, white coffee, while purchasing peppercorns, Goan chillies and cardamom. Sellers range from both foreigners and locals. Live bands will keep you entertained all thought the night and you always shake a leg to stay charged up.

    Sleepy little Portuguese Colony

Goa was brought on the world map after Vasco Da Gama anchored off its shores in 1498. The state still has a major Portuguese influence. I experienced this first hand, after I lost my GPS signal and just kept manoeuvring around the city without a destination. After a few kilometres, I could see brightly-coloured houses with amazing architecture and felt I was in Cape Town. I parked on the road side and walked along a maze of streets, when I reached Fontainhas, a Latin Quarter that dates back to 1770.

A house painted in yellow was something that caught my attention. There was a lady sitting on the terrace wearing a red floral dress and a hat reading a newspaper. Such an attire isnโ€™t something you find every day in India. On the next building, painted in white and green stripes, two young women were seated at the balcony chitchatting in a tone that was quite loud. While the place looks ancient, the level of cleanliness makes you wonder if you have landed in Europe.

We decided to have our lunch at Viva Panjim, located in one of the many narrow alleys. Inside the tiny restaurant, a septuagenarian lady greeted us at the counter. The interiors werenโ€™t as fancy and would transport you to the 60s. There is no air conditioning and I sat at the open veranda gorging on some sumptuous pork vindaloo.

What I loved about this place is that it still maintains the old world charm, even as rundown Volkswagen Beetle cars have been replaced by modern day hatchbacks.

    Spice Plantation Tour, Ponda

As per Google Maps, it would take me almost an hour and a half from the hotel to reach the spice plantation in Ponda. The landscape en route was lush green, mirrored by numerous canals.

I parked the vehicle near the rust gate of the plantation and purchased tickets worth Rs 400, which includes a buffet lunch and guided tour. While I thought, I knew everything about spices as I cook, the guide proved me wrong in the first five minutes. It is here I learnt that Vanilla originated in Mexico and is listed as one of the most expensive spices in the world. Cinnamon is basically the bark of a tree that originally comes from Sri Lanka.

Nonetheless, at the end of the educational tour, I was served ripe bananas refreshments and then it was time for lunch. While the food was average, the spread was good compared to the price. I had rice, vegetables in Goan style, chicken xacuti and prawn curry along with a glass of Feni.

    Magnificent Goan Food

If you are looking to gorge on some traditional Goan cuisine in North Goa, I suggest, you should head straight to Balcao. This cozy little Portuguese-style restaurant is situated by the lagoon of Baga River and is part of the Lazy Lagoon Sarovar Goa. Although I have tried popular places to taste authentic Goan food, it was here that I understood how different Goan cuisine actually is, in comparison to coastal cuisine available across the state.

You can enjoy Goan fish curry, crabs and lobsters. The best part of Balcao is thatย Chef Mangesh, the executive chef at Balcao has stayed in Goa for years just to master his cooking skills. He explained how a few spices โ€“ coriander, cinnamon, peppercorns and Goan chillies bought by Portuguese sailors changed the food of the region. So if you love batter fried fish fillet or mutton xacuti, you must visit this place.

Some points to keep in mind:

While there is dedicated parking place at the Saturday night market, parking gets full early during peak season time.

While taking a car on rent, make sure your registration plate is coloured black with yellow numerical.

Find a gas station is cumbersome as they are located far away from most tourist spots. So tank up when you get an opportunity.

There are small stalls that sell petrol in plastic bottles, which is overpriced and illegal. Do not buy petrol from them and always refuel at an authorized gas station.

  • Travel Guide to Myanmar

    Travel Guide to Myanmar

    ย About Myanmar

Mingalabar is a word of welcome and a wish for good fortune. This single word signifies the inherent nature of the people of Myanmar, offering world-class hospitality and always wishing others well. Traditions deeply rooted in the loving-kindness philosophy of Buddhism, the creed the Myanmar lives by is cedana, or heart-felt goodwill towards friends and strangers alike.

    Culture and Religion

85% of Myanmarโ€™s population practices Buddhism, but there are substantial numbers of Christians, Hindus, Muslims and animists throughout the country. It is therefore not unusual to see pagodas, churches, mosques and temples standing together in a single neighborhood. Spirit worship also exists side-by-side with Buddhism, as these minor gods are believed to be disciples of the Buddhaโ€™s teachings.

    History

Myanmarโ€™s history can be traced back to the 2nd century when the Rakhine ruled the west coast and Pyu civilization flourished in the central regions. Throughout the years great kingdoms came and went until the Third Myanmar Empire fell in 1885 to the colonial British; Myanmar subsequently regained independence in 1948. For many years Myanmar disappeared behind a wall of self-isolation, and only recently reopened its doors to the outside world, revealing the countryโ€™s unique culture and stunning scenery to new generations of visitors.

    Language

There are more than 100 ethnic groups in Myanmar, all with their own languages and dialects. The majority speaks Myanmar (Burmese), although English is widely spoken in urban areas and tourist hubs like Yangon and Mandalay. Helpful tour guides that speak major foreign languages can be booked through your tour operator.

    Geography

Myanmar is geographically the largest country in Southeast Asia. Rich not only in traditions, Myanmarโ€™s fertile land is crossed by a number of rivers that are used for transportation, irrigation, and also as a source of food. Myanmarโ€™s primary river artery is the Irrawaddy, often referred to here as the Ayerawady. Mines have yielded some of the worldโ€™s finest rubies and imperial jades, while the sea off the southern coast is prime breeding ground for cultured pearls of excellent luster.

5 Best Places to Visit in Myanmar

    Baganโ€™s Temples

Bagan and its thousands of majestic temples has been a sight to behold for over 1,000 years. Currently, 2,230 temples remain, compared with the several thousand chronicled back in ancient times. Regardless, this is more than anywhere else in the world! Bagan is considered to be the most popular destination in Myanmar, and the most memorable way to soak in its beauty is by a breathtaking hot air balloon ride at dawn or dusk.

    Inle Lake

Inle Lake is located in Shan State and is brimming with natural beauty and biodiversity. This lake is inhabited by the Intha people, famous for living in stilted houses constructed on the lake and cultivating floating gardens for centuries. Make sure to catch a glimpse of the fishermen pushing their boats forward using a unique leg-rowing technique in place of a typical oar.

    Golden rock

Picture this: a giant, golden boulder, with a pagoda on top, balancing precariously on the edge of a 1000m high cliff. Sounds like an unbelievable sight โ€“ and it is. For this reason alone, Golden Rock is a sight you have to see to truly believe. Known locally asย Kyaiktiyo Zedi, Golden Rock, is covered in gold leaf and is believed by locals to be held in place through one of the Buddhaโ€™s miracles and is said to house a strand of his hair. Visiting here is a pilgrimage for Myanmar Buddhists.

    Taung Kalat

Constructed at the summit of an extinct volcano plug, Taung Kalat is a breathtaking Buddhist monastery. Reaching the top is no easy feat: visitors must climb the 777 steps to reach the monastery and enjoy the birdโ€™s eye views of Bagan and the peak of Mount Popa. To add some ease and amusement to your arduous journey, be on the lookout for the friendly and curious monkeys seeking a treat.

    Shwedagon Pagoda

Located in Myanmarโ€™s bustling cultural capital of Yangon on Singuttara Hill, the 2,500-year-old Shwedagon Pagoda is arguably the most recognized and beautiful pagoda in the country. At over 300 feet, this looming and revered pagoda is covered in gold leaf and diamonds and emanates a gorgeous glow all day and night. Because of its religious relics and powerful presence, Shwedagon Pagoda is considered to be Myanmarโ€™s most sacred Buddhist site.

    Preparing a Trip to Myanmar

    Apply for a Visa

If you have a passport from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines and Vietnam, you can enter Myanmar as a tourist for up to 14 days. ย Otherwise, it is essential to apply for a Myanmar tourist visa before your trip. Myanmarโ€™s government recently implemented anย eVisaย program for 100 countries, which allows tourists to apply for a visa online. If you hold a passport from a country that is not on the e-visa list, you will still need to apply at a consulate or embassy in your home country. Please note that e-visas can only be used to enter the country through one of three international airports: Mandalay, Yangon or Nay Pyi Taw.

    Learn the Local Currency

Myanmarโ€™s local currency is called the Kyat (MMK), pronounced โ€˜chatโ€™. ย The central bank website displays the exchange rate to the USD each day. It is easy to change money at the airport, a bank, a hotel or a forex. There are also ATMs throughout larger cities. Not many places accept credit cards, but that is slowly changing and youโ€™ll be able to use visa or mastercard in some hotels and restaurants.

    Get Vaccinated

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, there are some vaccinations travelers should receive before traveling to Myanmar. Along with the recommended routine vaccines or measles-mumps-rubella, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, chickenpox, polio, and a yearly flu shot, the typhoid vaccine is strongly suggested to protect against contaminated food and water. The Yellow Fever vaccine is not necessary in Myanmar, however if traveling into the country from a nation with the YFV risk, the Myanmar government will ask for proof of vaccination. Another precaution to take is to obtain malaria medicine if traveling to areas with altitudes less than 3281 feet (1000 m). For example, there is no danger of malaria in Yangon and Mandalay.

    Learn the Lingo

Do your parents still refer to Myanmar as Burma? Thatโ€™s because up until 1989, this country had been called Burma under the British colonial administration and kept this name officially when it obtained independence in 1948. In 1989, it was switched to Myanmar.

    Pick a Season

Regardless of weather, Myanmar is a beautiful country. February to May sees a warm climate with barely any rainfall, and May to October is the lush, green rainy season. If youโ€™re seeking cooler, dry weather, head to Myanmar any time from October to February.

Cruise through Kerala in a houseboat!

Have you ever gone cruising in a houseboat on the backwaters of Kerala? If you haven’t, make sure you do. This is easily one amongst the most remarkable and unique experiences that Kerala state has to offer.

    Kerala House Boats

Present day houseboats are huge, slow moving exotic barges used for leisure trips, and are in fact a reworked version of the Kettuvallams of olden times. The original Kettuvallams were used to carry tons of rice and spices. A standard Kettuvallam can hold up to 30 tons of goods from Kuttanad to the Kochi port.

In Malayalam language Kettu refers to โ€˜dwelling structuresโ€™ โ€˜Vallamโ€™ means boat. These are boats with a thatched roof cover over wooden hulls. The boat is made of planks of jack-wood joined together with coir. This is then coated with a caustic black resin made from boiled cashew kernels. With careful maintenance, a Kettuvallam can last for generations.

A portion of the Kettuvallam was covered with bamboo and coir to serve as a restroom and kitchen for the crew. Meals were cooked onboard and supplemented with freshly cooked fish from the backwaters.

When ย modern trucks replaced this system of transport, people came up with a new way that would keep these boats, almost all of which were more than 100 years old, in the market. By constructing special rooms to accommodate travellers, these boats cruised forward from near-extinction to enjoy their present ย popularity.

Today these are a familiar sight on the backwaters and in Alappuzha alone, there are as many as 500 houseboats.

While converting kettuvallams into houseboats, care is taken to use only natural products. Bamboo mats, sticks and wood of the areca nut tree are used for roofing, coir mats and wooden planks for the flooring and wood of coconut trees and coir for beds. Nowadays, Solar panels are preferred for lighting.

Today, the houseboats boast of the same comforts of a good hotel including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. Parts of the curved roof of wood or plaited palm leaves open out to provide shade and allow uninterrupted views. While most boats are poled by local oarsmen, some are powered by a 40 HP engine. Boat-trains – formed by joining two or more houseboats together are also used by large groups of sightseers.

What is truly magical about a houseboat ride is the breathtaking view of the untouched and otherwise inaccessible rural Kerala that it offers, while you float in a relaxed way right through it.
